Lawrence DuBois has put together this DVD entitled, "Heroin & Health Consequences". The video is an expose' on the devastation of what black tar heroin and IV drug use has on the human body. This video not only serves as a great health lesson, but a strong warning to those who would ever use heroin or other drugs. This 20-minute documentary mandates the seriousness of heroin use in a formal setting with a leading medical examiner. Uniquely, Lawrence procures testimony and video footage from teenage addicts who regret ever trying heroin. Lawrence himself is shown with abscesses that nearly cost him his life. A rare ride-a-long with Seattle’s Medic One highlights the video with a scene of reviving an overdose patient. This is a must see for schools, families of addicts, and other institutions as well. Health Topics Covered in Video - Video Also Has Introduction & Epilog
Abscesses & Sepsis The first time I met Dr Alexander Moskovitz, the trauma surgeon for Everett Providence Hospital, was when I developed my fourth major abscess, the third one that required an operation. This surgery stuff started to become routine causing me to be desensitized to the seriousness of the way I was living.
I did notice a red lump that had been developing in my upper right leg over the last week or so. I never thought it was causing what I was experiencing, misjudging its potential danger, I thought the paralysis was a back problem since I’ve had disc and other back trouble in the past. Little did I know I was dying.
Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT & Pulmonary Emboli - PE
The image to the right from the video is an x-ray of a device called a vena cava filter. It was placed in me after several episodes of DVT and PE. This condition is more known by blood clots, they start in the legs and can end up in the lungs if untreated. The filter is an umbrella shaped device that is placed in the vena cava vein, which runs up the middle of the body taking blood back to the heart.
Using black tar heroin attributes to the risk of someone getting blood clots, especially if the injection point is in the lower extremities. I received this procedure because the medical staff had no confidence that I would stop using heroin anytime soon and perhaps this would save my life. The filter acts like a trap and catches large clots that would travel to the lungs or heart and cause death.
Endocarditis
Endocarditis is inflammation of the inside lining of the heart chambers and heart valves (endocardium). Risk factors for developing endocarditis include injection drug use. Early treatment of endocarditis improves the chances of a good outcome. However, valve destruction or strokes can result in death.
As in other parts of the video, the compelling expert testimony of Dr Gary Goldfogel, a medical examiner, describes what takes place on the valves of the heart. There is also a short interview with Tiffany, a woman who has had 6 strokes & 2 heart surgeries from endocarditis due to her heroin use.
Hepatitis
Hepatitis C is a common condition for those who use, not only heroin, but other illegal IV drugs. There is no cure for hepatitis C at this time. Video warns viewers of the dangers of sharing needles, the most common way of spreading Hep C.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, also called malignant hepatoma) is a primary malignancy (cancer) of the liver. Most cases of HCC are secondary to either a viral hepatitide infection (hepatitis B or C) or cirrhosis (alcoholism being the most common cause of hepatic cirrhosis). Picture to the right is a liver with hepatocellular carcinoma.
Overdose & Death
The image to the right is taken from video footage I obtained by riding along with Seattle's Medic One Unit. The man on the ground had overdosed on heroin and these paramedics revived him. Along with this scene is my narration on the inside scope of heroin overdose and Melissa (age19) who tells of her chilling experience with people who have overdosed.
has used some of this footage to use in a production they were doing in New York on Narcan, the opiod antagonist that is used to reverse the affects of heroin.
